If you’ve noticed that everyone seems to be catching the mahjong craze lately, you’re not alone. I’m officially catching it, too!

I’m still learning the rules and figuring out all of the different tile names, but one thing I’ve already learned is that having a good set of mahjong tiles makes learning and playing so much more fun.

Whether you’re brand new to mahjong like me or you’ve been playing for years, having a complete set that is easy to store, carry, and use is definitely worth it.

What Comes in a Mahjong Set?

When I first started learning mahjong, I quickly realized there are a LOT of different tiles to keep track of.

A good mahjong set should include all of the tiles you need to play, including the different suits, numbered tiles, directional tiles, jokers, and blank tiles.

Some of the tiles I already recognize are the North, South, East, and West tiles, along with the jokers. I’m still working on remembering all of the others!

If you’re learning like I am, having a complete set is helpful because you can start becoming familiar with the tiles while you learn the rules.

What I Like About This Mahjong Set

The first thing I noticed about this set is how nicely everything is packaged and organized.

The tiles come individually wrapped, which makes opening the set feel like a little unboxing experience. The tiles are also a great size and feel like they’re made to be handled and played with regularly.

I really like that the set includes all the pieces you need to get started, rather than having to purchase different pieces separately.

And, of course, it also comes with dice, which you'll need when playing.

The Storage Bag Makes It Easy to Take Anywhere

One of my favorite features is that the set comes with a carrying bag.

Mahjong has a lot of pieces, so having one place to keep everything together is really convenient.

Instead of having loose tiles and dice scattered around your house, you can put everything back into the bag when you're finished.

It also makes it easy to take your set to a friend's house for a game night, girls' night, or weekend getaway.

The Tiles Feel Like a Good Size

Since you're constantly picking up, moving, and arranging mahjong tiles, the size and feel of the tiles really matter.

These are a nice size for handling and have a good feel when you’re playing.

I also love that the details on the tiles are easy to see. When you’re learning the different tiles and trying to remember what everything means, having clear markings makes things much easier.

Perfect for Mahjong Beginners

I'm definitely still in the beginner stage when it comes to mahjong.

I’m learning the rules, learning the names of the tiles, and trying to figure out what I’m actually supposed to be doing!

But honestly, that’s part of the fun.

Mahjong can feel a little overwhelming when you first start because there are so many tiles and rules to learn. Having your own set gives you the opportunity to practice and become familiar with everything at your own pace.

And once you start playing with friends, it becomes even more fun.

A Few Things I Look for in Mahjong Tiles

If you’re shopping for your first mahjong set, here are a few things I would look for:

  • A complete set of tiles so you have everything you need to play

  • Easy-to-read markings so you can quickly identify each tile

  • A comfortable size and weight that makes the tiles easy to handle

  • Dice included so you don't have to purchase them separately

  • A storage bag or case to keep everything organized

  • Durable construction so the tiles can hold up to lots of game nights

Is It Worth Getting Your Own Mahjong Set?

If you’re getting into mahjong, I definitely think having your own set is worth it.

You can keep it at home for practicing, bring it to a friend's house, or have a regular mahjong night with your family and friends.

Plus, there’s something about having your own set of tiles laid out on the table that makes game night feel a little more special.

Final Thoughts

I’m still learning all of the rules and terminology, but I’m having so much fun getting into mahjong.

If you’re also just starting out, my biggest advice is don’t give up! There’s definitely a learning curve, but once you start recognizing the tiles and understanding how the game works, it becomes so much more enjoyable.

And having a good set of mahjong tiles is a great place to start.

So if you've been thinking about joining the mahjong craze, grab some friends, get yourself a set, and start learning. You might just get hooked like I did!
